Android Gaming Setup Guide — Phone as Wireless PC Controller
This complete guide covers everything you need to use your Android phone as a wireless Xbox 360 controller for Windows PC. Requirements, step-by-step installation, connection, troubleshooting, and tips to get the best performance.
Requirements
Android phone: Android 8.0 (Oreo) or higher, any screen size, any manufacturer. The gyroscope feature requires a phone that has a physical gyroscope sensor (most Android phones from 2016 onwards do).
Windows PC: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit). The installer will not run on 32-bit Windows. The PC and phone must be on the same WiFi network — they do not need internet access during gaming, just local network connectivity.
Android 8.0+
Any Android phone from 2017 onwards — budget phones included.
Windows 10/11 x64
64-bit Windows only. No Mac or Linux server yet.
Same WiFi Network
Phone and PC must be on the same router — no internet needed after setup.
Step-by-Step Setup
Step 1 — Phone: Go to the Download page on this website and download the Gamepad APK. On your Android phone, open Settings → Security → allow "Install from unknown sources" for your browser. Open the downloaded APK and install it.
Step 2 — PC: Download the Gamepad Server for Windows from the Download page. Run the installer — accept the UAC prompt for the ViGEmBus driver. The server launches after installation and shows a QR code on screen.
Step 3 — Connect: Open the Gamepad app on your phone. Tap the QR scan button. Point your camera at the QR code on the PC screen. Connection completes in under 3 seconds. Your phone is now a wireless Xbox 360 controller.
Tips for Best Performance
Use 5GHz WiFi if your router and phone both support it. This reduces latency from 15–30ms (2.4GHz) to under 10ms (5GHz). To check: go to your phone WiFi settings and look for "5GHz" or "5G" networks from your router.
Keep the phone and PC on the same router segment — avoid mesh network satellite nodes if possible as they can add latency. For the lowest latency, position yourself so there are no walls between your phone and the router.
